Partial answer: I stumbled onto the same thing and did some experimenting. I used 3 different video cards, ET6x00, S3Trio, & TVGA9680. All three cards would do reset with some modes, would partially reset (right cols but wrong rows) with others, while with others the selected mode would stick. Which modes would work with which cards varied. Try all those from from 'vga=ask' -> 'scan'. You may find one that sticks that you like. IIRC, some modes that would stick were 80x30, 100x37, 132x25. You can specify the mode in lilo in either decimal, three numeral digits, or hex, 0x000, format.
