I highly suspect this is a Mandrake-ism, but I might be wrong. I had a plain-jane 2.4.5 kernel running fine an my Mandrake 7.0 system before I upgraded to 8. Like you, I had a hell of a time getting version 8 installed until I used one of the 2.2 boot floppy images. Upon completing the installation, I moved my 2.4.5 kernel source tree back into place, did the 'make dep clean bzImage,' and I'm happily running 2.4.5 once again. I don't know if this makes much of a difference, but I loathe and despise loadable kernel modules. All of my hardware drivers are compiled in. Could that be it? Not sure. jas -- Jason Van Patten AOL IM: Jason VP
