Does it absolutely have to be PCI? External modems work far better.

Subject: [expert] Modem question
Hello all,
I'm looking for an inexpensive, reliable PCI hardware modem that works with Linux. Most of what I see at computer shows are Winmodems. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd appreciated it.
Thanks,
Dan
