yeah, I figured that much out,,

it seems that reiserfsck found problems with /var and I had to rebuild the
tree...

I have checked fstab and all is as it should be....

so now I am trying to look at the logs and see if they have anything to say
with what is going on..

when it stops at login, the computer doesn't appear to be crashed, I can use
ALT-F2-F6 but it has the same effect, (no login)

also, the caps and numberlock keys still work, which is unusual when a
system is crashed...

so its something else..

got no ideas what though...

I have looked in the logs, messages and syslog and can find no unusual
messages,, this is nuts..

Hi Frank,

There is a fsck for reiserfs, and I think that its called fsck_reiserfs or
something like that.
BUT I don't belive that this will help you at all, if you say that you can
boot up, and login that means that the kernel have found at least your /boot
volume, and your / root volume, and mounted them with no problems, if the
filesystems was broken they would not have been mounted.

What I think went wrong here is that the kernel is booting from another
partition than the one you want it to.
Check /etc/lilo.conf and look for root=
Check /etc/fstab and see from where the / root is mounted

Ofcause you can always mount other volumes with "mount -treiserfs /dev/sd??
/myvol" and get to your data.

Maybe check your disk partitions with fdisk /dev/sd?

sd? = SCSI Disks replace ? with whatever number you have...
hd? = IDE Disks    - ||-

Reiser is for your information a very stable filesystem, and I am sure it
have nothing to do with your problem here...

Please try some of the suggestions above, and resort to the fsck as an last
option.

Kind regards,
Heino Walther
