Nathan, Sorry it took so long to reply. I just found this email. I'm not an expert but will try to explain... The aRts is a part of KDE. It's mainly for KDE related software and KDE sounds. XMMS has the option of using aRts instead of OSS but I would just stick with OSS. OSS and aRts can run at the same time. You can configure it by running KDE Control Center. Then go to Sound -> Sound Server.
