I had numerous problems with the Soundblaster Live under Linux.

Normally the KDE sound servers either failed to start, produced no
sound, or interfered with audio output on some applications.

I then remembered that the SBLIVE has a fixed sampling rate which caused
problems for apps under Winblows...

Sure enough changing the sampling rate to 48000 and setting KDE to
autodetect permitted all the aRts and OSS applications to work properly.
The sound servers always come up properly now too.

BTW: The LM8.1 install configures the SBLIVE, but it doesn't seem to
load all of the modules.

Do an lsmod.

You should remove all modules for RAM using rmmod, then reconfigure the
soundblaster in the Control Panel.

Reboot the system, (yeah really) and now do an lsmod, you'll see twice
as many interrelated modules appear.

Next bring up the AuMixer in KDE & set the volumes. Go into the KDE
control panel and "save" the mixer settings.

This modifies the ALSA-CTRL files to set the volumes upon bootup.

Finally dump some sound fonts onto your system and load them with
sfxload.

I recommend http://www.thesoundsite.net/ for some wonderfull collections
of freebee sound fonts.

Set your midi in the KDE Control Panel (it finally works yeah!)

Note: the SBLIVE under Linux cannot seem to load sound fonts greater
than 32 megs properly. It actually loads them, but some voices do not
sound. I assume that this is because the SFXLOAD program cannot handle
the back switching required for larger fonts.

To get the joystick port to work, add this to /etc/modules.conf

"alias char-major-13 input"
"above input joydev emu10k1-gp analog gameport"

Then add

"/sbin/modprobe joydev"

Into /etc/rc.local

There probably is another way of doing this, but this works fine for me.

BTW:
Anyway, hope this helps...

|Nathan,
|
|Sorry it took so long to reply. I just found this email. I'm
|not an expert
|but will try to explain... The aRts is a part of KDE. It's
|mainly for KDE
|related software and KDE sounds. XMMS has the option of using
|aRts instead
|of OSS but I would just stick with OSS. OSS and aRts can run
|at the same
|time. You can configure it by running KDE Control Center. Then go to
|Sound -> Sound Server.
