I asked about the compiler you were using because I want to check if you were using the gcc version 3. You should use kgcc ( kernel gcc ) I use gcc 2.96.x (the gcc shipped in mdk 8.1) and egcs. Something a little similar happen to me last Friday at home. I install MDK8.1, with ext3 in the / and /usr partitions . It was ok..... Then I try to install some modules (not recompiling the kernel, just the module) to make my sound card work (I have a card with the aureal vortex chip). The modules didn't compile.. a lot of errors (gcc 3 compiler, my first mistake ). I change the compiler (rpm -e gcc3 and rpm -i gcc 2.96 and egcs) At last the module compiles but when I try to insmod the machine hangs. With mdk 8.0 that never happen.. Then I check a little more.... and I find kinda of ugly stuff in the /usr/lib directory (may be the hang). It was my first time with ext3 and I didnt know how stable it is. Some links in /usr/lib where messed up with commas in the names. Links and files with names like libxxx.so;433452 And more random errors... At that time I was a little afraid so.... So I install again MDK81 with ext2. Now with ext2 it compiles without problems. And insmod without problems. And I have sound with my aureal.. :) This is only a shoot in the dark. May be I made a mistake and I didn't notice it. But a friend of mine have similar problem with journaling filesystems in root partitions. Could it be???
