I've heard that Mdk 8.1 has some installation problems. I can attest that I've had problems on 2 of 2 machines, although both those same machines loaded 8.0 without a hitch.
Don't give up just yet. It may well be that your problem lies with Mdk 8.1 rather than the device in question. I got 8.1 to work on a Toshiba Satellite 4525XCDT, albeit with a few teething problems (related to the CD drive). The resulting install, however, is worth the effort as I was able to put a Raiserfs on the laptop and it is much more responsive. (I also have 128 MB of RAM, so you results will obviously be different.) What about putting Debian on the laptop? Debian works better than Mdk on lower-powered systems.
