for speed and security, postfix by far.. for ease of config, postfix by far.
for stuff like content_filtering, (ie passing messages through some external program for processing then getting them back, like virus scanning) postfix by far. Its especially secure if run from a chroot jail,, but I don't think thats absoloutly necessary. as for hard disk for 50 clients, I will assume you are reffering to the var/spool directory, not the whole hard disk, but either way, it depends on several factors, speed of your system, speed of your connection, type of users, (ie do they send 10mb emails all over the place each day?) are they 50 users local users or are you worried about the spool getting to big? assume about 100mb per user is safe, but not always, quotes could be handy in that case. as for the spool, to be safe, I'd make sure you have at least 400 to a gig free in the spool partition.. like I said, it depends on how efficient your system and setup is. webmin can configure both sendmail and postfix.. but postfix is easy, go to /etc/postfix and read the following: (they are full of explanitory comments.) main.cf #This is your main config file. master.cf #This is another config that you won't really need unless setting up pipes and stuff. virtual # virtual address mapping, essentially to recieve mail for domains and redirect them to other non local . . # address's. canonical # essentially address rewriting. you probably won't need that. thats it for the basics, there is alot more to learn, but that will get you off and running. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Stephen Liu Sent: Friday, 9 November 2001 3:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [expert] Mail server Hi All, Kindly advise ; 1) What will be the advantage and disadvantage of Postfix and Sendmail ? 2) Which ranks on top ? 3) Which components should be installed for each of them to upgrade a Linux box to a mail server ? 4) What shall be the minimum capacity of a hard disc serving 50 clients ? Thanks in advance. B.R. Stephen Liu
