Ahh! Interesting! There are several ways to set up mail. (I come from a Windows background.) It seems that the traditional approach in Linux is to use an MTA (Mail Transport Agent) like sendmail, postfix, qmail, or whatever to send mail in Linux. This fits in very well with a LAN where the MTA might also distribute mail on the LAN (I think). In dos / Windows, the traditional approach is not to use an MTA, but, instead, to set up your mail client to be a client to the pop3 and smtp servers of your ISP provider (or, more recently, as an IMAP client to the IMAP server at your ISP). This approach (setting up your mail client as a client to the pop3 and smtp (or imap) servers at your ISP) also works in Linux, and, I'm sure, is what the original poster is attempting to do. I know this works in Linux, because I can send and receive from KMail on my Linux box, set up exactly this way. For various reasons (primarily compatibility), I must continue to use Netscape 3 on Windows as my mail client until I set up postfix (and procmail, fetchmail, and a pop3 and smtp server, IIUC) on my Linux server so I can distribute mail on my local LAN. So, to summarize, postfix is not required to send mail in Linux. Hope this helps, Randy Kramer
