Well, strictly speaking you don't *need* Postfix, or any SMTP
server on your machine. You just need access to an SMTP server
somwhere on the internet or your LAN. KMail sends to that server,
and that server in turn sends to the destination.

KMail doesn't only spool mail into/from local mailboxes. It does
SMTP as well, and can send to any SMTP server reachable from
your box. An SMTP and POP-capable mail client is not the same
as a traditional *NIX MTA, although many programs that started life
as MTAs now have SMTP and POP functionality.
