I have configured my printer using the Mandrake tool, which uses cups (the
test page reports that the printer was set up using cups).

This is an HP PS500 sitting on a Windows 2000 system, using SAMBA.

The printer works fine when I am root, but when I am logged on as me, my
requests are ignored (from Netscape, etc.).

If I do am lpstat, I am prompted for a username and password.

I have added myself to the lp group, so when I input the username and
password lpstat delivers the information I have requested.

This also works when I lpr filename.

Along with the virtues of being able to print from Netscape, this problem
also seems to be impeding Open Office from working for a user other than root
(it just hangs there, come up fairly quickly from root).

I have perused the documents, and it appears they have skipped over this very
issue everywhere I look.

thanks,
mg
