there is the posibility of "automagiclly" connecting when ever anyone wants 
to connect (in /etc/ppp/options. add a "DEMAND"  and  "IDLE 300" statement , 
or see "man pppd",  the demand will enable dialing when eversomeone on the 
internal lan needs to connect (kinda a problem if you use the same phone line 
for talking and have , say, mail checking, since the computer will pick up 
and attempt to dial. the "idle" statement is seconds of inactivity, so 300 
would give 5 mins befor an automatic hangup.)
