Unfourtunately I don't think that will allow me to use command line 
non-user specific dial up connection control.  I will have a go though 
and see what happens.

the problem is that /sbin/ifup ppp0 does not work - even under root. 
The modem light flashes briefly and then the command stalls.  It has 
happened with Mandrake before and I wonder if this is a Mandrake 
specific problem to use command line / non user specific (generic?) dial 
up control.  Only KPPP seems to work.
