Are you sure your resolution in X is supported by your projector? 1024X768 is about as high as most go. If you're trying to do more than that, you can get the results you're seeing.
The fact that you're getting a blank screen tells me things are switching as they should, but something is up on your projector. You may also want to try plugging things into a monitor for testing. Once things work there, then move to the projector.
