if it were me, I'd install and use wvdial, its fast, and better, its intelligent, if the connect script is doing something unusual, wvdial will likely fix it..
for instance, my ISP uses two different router types, and the connect script is different for each.. so what works on one, won't work on the other, the only two ways to reliably get the connection up is kpppp or wvdial.. get the package, install it, then do the following: touch /etc/wvdial.conf then do the following: wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf make sure you modem is on and plugged in, and make sure you haven't tried ifup ppp0 (reboot if necessary) the above command will look for your modem, and interrogate it when it finds it, figure out what its capable off. then, edit the wvdial.conf file you created, it will have about 15 lines in it now, the last three are the ones you want. Phone = xxxxxxxxx Username = xxxxxxxx Password = xxxxxxxx Make them as they should be, and then run wvdial and it will dial your ISP and do all the work for you, it will look at what is send from the isp and respond accordingly, instead of going through a fixed script, works great.. never failed for me yet. I made two files, dial and hangup and put then in /usr/sbin and made them executable. in dial I put this: #!/bin/bash wvdial & and in hangup: killall wvdial so my girlfriend need only type dial or hangup to start or kill the conection. you could make them sudo as well, so any user can start or kill the connection, but I didn't bother, I just leave a xterm su'd to root up all the time. give that a shot, you'll never look back, it also dials up and connects faster by far then my old semi reliable chat script. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: skidley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, 17 December 2001 1:54 AM To: Franki Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [expert] ifup ppp0 On Sun, 16 Dec 2001, Franki wrote: > try telling msec to set your security as medium,, that should give you back > access. > I set msec at 3 and it still didnt work. I even set it to 1 to try and it didnt work. I get ifup ppp0 failed with error 8 and also error 35 sometimes. error 8 just means connect script failed. But I never made any changes to the script so why would it fail? It worked just fine b4. I could even use ifup ppp0 as a user, now I get users can't control this device. I have gone to Linuxconf under PPP and set the option allow any users to (de)activate the interface. This is mind boggling. I would hate to have to reinstall to be able to use ifup ppp0 again but I've tried everything I can think of. I have been thinking of switching to debian maybe now is the time. -- . --- |o_o | |:_/ | Give Micro$oft the Bird!!!! // \ \ Use Linux!!!!
