yup, its a pain, and it was really bad for me at one stage because I added
wvdial to rc.local to get it to dial on boot.

that was bad because I had to boot to the rescue disk and re-edit rc.local
and add & to the end..

without it, the server just sat there, I couldn't get a console, and it
wouldn't finish setting up, even ALT-F1 to F5 wouldn't get me to the
console.. so I always add the & now,, the best lesson is a nasty one, that
way you don't ever make the mistake again.

wvdial is an excellent program though, if it was expanded abit, ie so users
could initiate it without sudo, and you could set some parameters without
using it in chat mode, and it brought up all ppp interfaces when it
connected....it would be a fantastic program,, I hope development hasn't
stopped on it.

are you sure the redhat box wasnt already set su'd?

One problem i have using wvdial is wvdial& or wvdial & doesnt give me back
shell prompt. It seems it does for you as you said u have a bash script
with cmd wvdial &.
