I think its marketing... they had to do something to get around intels exorbitant claims for the P4
so they created the XP and the new rating scheme... the 1800+ is ahead of the P4 in most respects, so they didn't go overboard and claim it was something its not.. here is my cat/proc/cpuinfo (from a mdk7.2 system, not overclocked or anything running 2.2.19-6.3mdksecure) [root@mail /root]# cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1533.073 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no sep_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 19 mmxext mmx fxsr 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 3060.53 I vaguely remember having higher bogomips before so I might have dropped the bios to "bios defaults" still, 3060.53 bogomips is nothing to scoff at, particularly since it doesn't take any of the XP's optimisations into account, like SSE and 3dmax it zips along nicely, and runs cooler then the 1.4 thunderbird I had before, and apparently it can be stably overclocked to a real 1900mhz (ie real not the p-rating) so 1533 to 1900mhz, which would make it an XP2200+ or thereabouts.. not to shabby at all.. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Lee Roberts Sent: Monday, 17 December 2001 7:06 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Linux Mandrake Expert Mailing List Subject: RE: [expert] Shopping for Motherboard for Linux At 08:48 AM 12/15/2001 +0800, Franki wrote: > >Mine has a Athlon XP 1800+ > > Does the XP mean that it's optimized for Windows XP? :-D
