is your "append devfs mount" or "devfs nomount" in lilo.conf?
I (and last I read the errita for 8.1, so did Mandrake) recommend "nomount"
if using the kernel that came with the CDs. if you edit lilo.conf, remember
to type "lilo" as root in a text console, without the quotes to get lilo to
check for errors and update itself, then reboot. Devfs has made a few changes
in how things in /dev work, along with some problems for supermount, that 8.0
did not have.
