I have tons of old 8mm film that I want to burn onto a DVD. I have been
looking on the net for video houses to do this for me but the cost is
enormous. By doing it myself I can but a video card and a DVD burner and
still have saved myself a ton of money (and have a DVD burner out of the
deal when I am done!!)

I have been reading about this on the web and it looks like the way the
video houses accomplish this is to play the 8mm movies with a working 8mm
projector ( I actually have one of these!!) onto a screen while recording
the video with a video recorder. Then run the video from the recorder into
a computer with some video editing software, edit the video however you want
and then burn it to a DVD.

First of all, I want to do this totally with Linux and open source. I know
I will have to purchase a DVD writer and a good video card. I need some
killer video editing software and some pointers if anyone has done this
before.

Any ideas?
