hde is where it should be since the later ASUS boardss properly embedded 
the controller and for example 7.2 would install on them with no special 
parameters.

The thing you need to accomplish is to boot to hde...  You need 
something bootable at hda to manage that, and it can be a CD...  try 
with your CD drive hooked as primary master and see what happens--I have 
successfully set up linux to multiple-boot from hdc while occupying hda 
with an ls120 and hdb with a cdrw before.
