"There was an error . . . XFree86-4.1.0 . . ." was displayed during the
package installation phase of install. The configure X phase of install
turned green all by itself without asking any questions, leaving me at
the "installation is complete screen". I've stripped most of the success
lines and attached the balance of /root/install.log.
I figured it would be pointless to startx or telinit 5. # 'XFree86
-configure' generated "command not found". So I did:

Since XFree86-4.1.0-17mdk.i586.rpm & XFree86-server-4.1.0-17mdk.i586.rpm
were missing, I copied them both from CD to /tmp and in /tmp did:
# rpm -i XFree86-4.1.0-17mdk.i586.rpm
# rpm -i XFree86-server-4.1.0-17mdk.i586.rpm
'grep -qa | find ree' now shows that the two missing rpms have been
installed, but 'XFree86 -configure' now works, but reports mouse not
found, and mouse was found and used during installation. When I execute
'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new', the NEC 2V settings lights
scroll continuously as they do when something is wrong in the video, the
screen is black, and all attempts to do anything with the keyboard, like
switch to another console or CAD, are futile. Hard reset required to get
system back, although fsck at restart was not required.
I next edited /root/XF86Config.new to add DefaultColorDepth 16 and to
the depth 16 display subsection modes, virtual and viewport lines. I
again attempted the server test, and again the screen went black with
scrolling lights, but this time CAD did initiate a shutdown and restart.
Some possibly relevant hardware: Matrox G450 16 Mb, K6/2-450, VIA MVP3
chipset, 128 Mb RAM.
I've downloaded
ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/linux/2001/beta_133_143/mga-133_143.tgz,
but I'm not sure whether this is a necessary direction to take. The
Matrox site doesn't seem to say why this driver even exists.
"The Linux XFree86 HOWTO" is pretty spartan, leaving no clues what I
should do next. What do I need to do to make X work?
