About a month agt, I used the Software Manager to de-install gcc as it
came with LM 8.1, and then manually installed gcc-2.95.3 from the GNU
site.

I noticed the other day, though, that the software manager still says
that original gcc is installed. I removed it (again) and as far as I
can tell, the software manager doesn't actually seem to do anything at
all. After removing gcc, it _still_ says that it is installed, and as
far as I can tell no gcc-related files on the disk were actually
changed.

This may have been the cause of some gcc-related weirdnesses I have
been seeing -- apparently when I originally de-installed gcc, nothing
actually happened, so when I performed a manual installation of 2.95.3,
I ended up (I think) with some strange combination of the two.

So how do I _really_ get rid of gcc entirely from my system? This would
then allow me to start completely from scratch and put a clean gcc
2.95.3 on the system. I am seeing programs that build and work fine
under MSC++ and LM 7.2, but segv under my current set-up on LM 8.1.
