First off: Thank you to everyone for all the help & suggestions. They
did lead to the answer.

The problem was:
When MDK was loaded, it did not create the proper device files. The
/dev/sg<n> device files were not there. (located this from the CD
Writing HOW-TO (Thanks Lee Roberts for reminding me about that
document!)) Creating them, and then re-running cdrecord -scanbus kicked
things off, and it's working now. (whew).

Thanks again!
The drive is burning a Cd as I'm typing this. :)
