Ok gang, this is WAY off topic. :) Somebody convince me about something: The Story: The other day, I was in a local half price books, and saw a small stack of Quake 3. Linux Edition on the shelf. All packaged up, and in nifty silver metal boxes (cool box by the way! Probably cost more to make than the contents!). The best part: It was only $14.98 for a real, full factory box!
Being a vereran of Doom, Quake, and Quake II, I couldn't resist it for that price, and grabbed one. On the drive home, I was beset with images of long the dark corridors, and passageways, that made up previous Quake episodes. All the challenges along the way to the final objects: Beat they finaly warrior that the Strogg had to offer. The path along the way was littered with challenges, and puzzles to work out. When I got home, I spent a couple of hours "futzing" with my box, and with glx, and libGL, etc., trying to get that to function at a frame rate high enough to make Quake III worth playing (a challenge on this old box!). But after some hours of that, and finally building the utah version, Quake III finally bloomed into life. And there I was presented with: A death match. And that seems to be it. The online death matches were not my favorite part of Quake. I liked the story line, and the whole challenge. Not just running around a couple of rooms, shooting pointlessly at anything that moves. Quake III looks like shelf-ware to me. Unless I've missed something very profound in the setup. So: Could one of you Quake III esperts please tell me: What did I miss? Is that all there is to it now? Did Id really whimp out that badly, that they have dumped the story line, and turned the whole thing into just a death match? Please tell me I'm wrong! So could somebody convince me of just what all the noise about Quake III was all about? If that is all there is to it, this one is going back. Even at a mere $14.98, that's too much to pay for a cute metal box. I guess the good news for any of you with ATI Rage Pros: Quake III will work on it, but only with some mods to existing libraries. :) Ok... I now return you to your regular topics.
