Damn man, sounds like you're hating life right about now (but I think we've all been there at some point in time).
Did you ever get your sound working? And as far as your network problems go, if you do a 'netstat -rn', do you have a default gateway assigned? And I'd say stay far away from the Mandrake pcmcia packages. If you've got any Red Hat cds available, I'd suggest installing theirs (that's what I ended up having to do yesterday when I'd completely run out of ideas to get my flash card reader to work in a custom built kernel). Did you ever download the legit kernel source? And what do you have in your /etc/modules.conf?
