I have built 2.4.17 from source from kernel.org MOSTLY
with success...there are lots of errors on bootup, non
are fatal except for one that prevents me from getting
a network connection:

sit0: unknown hardware address 776
socket: protocol not available - make sure
CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER are enabled in your
kernel.

I am in the process of rebuilding the kernel again
after fixing the above...I THINK. I had Packet socket
enabled but not Packet filter...didn't think I'd need
it. I am not a router or gateway. Anyway, we'll see
in a few minutes after the build finishes.

I have a 3c589 card and the module installs fine, I
just can't get a connection.

Sound with my solo1 ONLY works if I build sound
support and the solo1 driver into the kernel.

There are a host of other error messages that load up
my /var/log/messages file but don't seem to affect the
system. I may try fiddling with kernel config
settings later to get rid of them assuming the latest
build works OK.
