That's a good idea. There are really two ways you can do this - provide
side-by-side installs (i.e. maybe stick 3.0 in /opt/kde), or to make an
install option where you choose between the two (with a warning: "KDE 3.0
might not be stable enough for production environments").

Definately not beta software. Although, honestly, even .0 releases from the
KDE project (1.0, 2.0, and I bet 3.0) seem to be more mature than their GNOME
bug-fix release cousins. So, if KDE stays on course for 3.0, the March 18th
release should provide us with a very stable environment that is much better
than KDE 2.2.x.
If they did what you are suggesting (choice of installs), all they would
have to do is wait until maybe March 20th to start burning CD's. while that
is a while from now, just thing of all the bugs that can be found in other
places between now and then...

True. My main thinking is just that newbies are going to get frustrated if
they want to download something from apps.kde.com, and all the new apps
require something they don't have (KDE 3.0). While there is some luxury in
waiting a release to include - say - KDE 2.2.1, because KDE 2.0 software and
2.2.2 software are all binary compatible, KDE 3.0 is quite a bit different in
that everything before it is now incompatible.
