This might sound stupid but did you check the command that GIMP isues to 
print?
It defaults to "lpr" so if you're using Cups you'll have to point it to that, 
using "qtcups' instead.
I'ts to be found under the <setup printer> button. Also be sure that
papersize is set right, it doesn't default to A4.

I'm not sure of the other packages (GIMP rulez!:)) but I know Staroffice 
handles .tif images well --so if you've got it installed you could use that. 
I always use it's vector graphics capabilties to 'lay out' printable pages 
with multiple graphics on them. Works like charm:)
