Hmm, I got into the thread a little late and missed the original
information.

Anywho, have you tried running the ssh client with the verbose option?
It might give you a little more information on where to look (e.g.,
permissions on the user config files, permissions on the host configs,
lets you know if you're even connecting, etc..).

ssh -v name_of_remote
