This is probably the most asked question, with "why is kapm-idle using
al my cpu?" a hot contender.  Simple answer to prevention is: Don't use
update to install kernels.  It breaks things almost every time.

You can jump into rescue mode and fix the links etc. if you know what
you are doing.  The easy way is to boot from the install CD, choose
expert and upgrade.  Choose no packages to install and let the install
complete.  Takes very little time and will get you back up without any
problems.

If you prefer the rescue version, have a look in the archives.  You'll
find many replies there.
