My understanding is that PPPoE and DHCP are mutually exclusive (see also
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/configure.html). Which one does
your Telco use?
Assuming it is PPPoE, ifconfig should show both the ppp and the eth
interfaces up. What does ifconfg show when you configure pppoe (not dhcp)?

What device is pts? The second line shows that the PPPoE client started,
it probably sent out the PADI packet but did not receive the PADO
answwer from the Telco. Could it be that it was not connected to the eth
interface?
