Ever since I upgraded from 8.2 RC1 to the official 8.2 release, gdm
won't start. When I come up into runlevel 5, it tries to start, and for
a brief moment the "X" cursor and the greyish background flicker onto
the screen, but then they flicker off again. After 5 tries, it gives up
and says "Failed to start the display server several times in a short
time period; disabling display :0".

But kdm and xdm work, and I can log in fine with both. I am using all
the same config files in /etc that I had before the upgrade (when I
noticed the problems, I restored them explicitly from a backup to be
sure).

There is something in syslog that says: "gconfd (keltik-1863): GConf
server is not in use, shutting down", but I don't know what gconf does
or if it has any bearing on this.

Can someone steer me in the right direction? I've no idea what to try.

Thanks,
Kathy
