I realized I had two e1000 modules on my computer the original MDK 8.2
one and  the one compled from the downloaded driver.  I tried moving the
e1000.o.gz file in 

/lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk-orig/kernel/3rdparty/e1000 , 

(which is the original to: /root temporarily, for safekeeping)

and left the freshly compiled e1000.o (which lives in
/lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/drivers/net) where it was installed by
the make install command.

now the card works.
