Brian, Because you have such a good name, I'll make you a gift if you like of some scripts which handle this for me. But to use these, you are going to have do to this the RIGHT way.
First, the modem goes on the linux box. This is the right place for it! Your linux machine will make a nice firewall for the XP system. Second, you set up Samba under linux, if you haven't already and configure a public area that both linux and the XP box can see. This will be useful for other things too! Next, configure your dialup access in linux (kppp) and enable internet connection sharing (standard stuff). Then you set up my script to run as a daemon. It sits and watches for a flag file to be created on the shared area, puts the link up and keeps it up as long as the flag file is there, then takes it down when it is removed. On XP, the script to put the link up is just a little batch file which sets the flag, and loops waiting for the server to see it, then tells you "It's coming up" or words to that effect. Another batch file does the reverse to take it down. These can be icons on the desktop - very user friendly. If that's of any interest, let me know and I'll send you the scripts. cheers Brian On Fri, 2002-05-03 at 01:05, Brian York wrote: > When i leave college in a few days i will also be leaving this wonderful T1 > connection and the constant connection and looking at 3 months of 56k (ohh > lord help me 1MB/s vs 5KB/s) Thus now that i am full time linux user (hurray) > it may make my home network not work as smooooth as it did with XP (note: not > prasing M$ at all) > > The nice XP to XP to XP to XP thing: > over x-mas break i had all 4 comp using winXP 1 server and 3 clients (i know > xp isn't servre software but follow me on this, hehe) With a xp server it had > the nice dial up gateway set up were you could share access to all the comp > to be able to disconnect and connect to the internet with out having to go to > the server and do it. > > My prob: > Is there anyway to add a linux computer in to the network and have the same > convenience as if i was using XP (being able to disconnect the net connection > on the server from my linux box) > > I don't want to change there server to linux because it took my parents a week > or so to fully under stand how to login in to xp.
