use KDE Control Center to do that. Go to system --> login manager ( i'm sorry bu ti think you will have to look for something like that, my installation is not english language. ) once you get it, look for a tab in which you can see a small listbox containing all wm kinds available for you. click the button 'go to administrator mode' at the bottom of the window, enter the root password, remove the old 'kde' entry from kdm and add a new one, call it 'kde3' . the rest should be done automagically. note: just in case, you can open KDE control center by typing 'kcontrol' in a console.
