Edit /etc/inittab and on the last line change x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon to #x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon Note that I always comment out and add that way if it doesn't work I can always revert back without losing anything.
