Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a spot here.......I've set up my 2 networks, put up a fine
firewall using 'smoothwall', everything's working just great...SO! I'm
getting bored.

Thus I decided to start on making/creating my very own private
network/internet server i.e. a p2p connection using a modem (or 2).

To be more clear: I own a small freight barge that hauls all sorts of cargoes
all over Europe (from Ste to Hamburg to the Black Sea and back) using the
inland waterways with me and my wife as the crew. @home in the Netherlands I
have a cable connection (zeelandnet.nl) and is need be a modem-connection for
my lan, but aboard ship (a 3 pc lan) I'm stuck with a gsm connection.

Now: I would like to dial-in to my own @home lan directly, that is: not using
some kind of local isp (where-ever I may be) and collect my mail, and maybe
offer some service to other collegaes in time. VPN looks like a logical
solution but requires a local ISP or an internationally accessible telephone
number at my home ISP or some other kind of roaming service with gigantic
fee's.
Frankly, when we're abroad (out of the Netherlands) we are extremely pleased
with ourselves if we can keep our monthly telephone bill below the $500,-
mark. And believe me: Mandrake expert and -newbie are set to 'no_mail', I'm
talking about 6 - 7 mails maximum on a daily basis.

Ie been 'google-ing' all over the place tonight but the closest I can get is
'modem sharing howto' , lots of isp offers, hylafax and/or win98 with the
networkserver installed.

The latter option is certainly NOT what I'd favour as I don't want to
reinstall MS again and certainly don't want to put my whole system at risk.
Anyway, if it's there: I prefer GPL for better or for worse:o)

A few hints to get my nose pointed in the right direction would be great,
practical experience tips even better.

Expectations,
Harm.
