1. I have to re-type it (since I have to send this from a non-Linux box),
but here is exactly what it looks like after I type a sox command when I
have realplayer running:

$ sox -V -c2 -r 44100 -t ossdsp -w -s /dev/dsp test.wav

and that's it. Nothing else until I hit ctrl-C.

2. How do I find out for sure what sound driver is in use? The magic of
mandrake configuration these days is so good that I never had to configure
anything to get sound to work, so I have no idea what it did behind the
scenes.

3. I am running LM 8.1. As far as I know all of the sound stuff is exactly
as mandrake configured it. If it's relevant (I guess that it probably
isn't) I am using KDE. I am doing all this stuff as a regular user, not
root.

"Use native sound drivers" is checked. Neither of the "Sound card
compatibility" settings is checked. (These are labelled "Disable 16-bit
sound (use 8-bit only)" and "Disable custom sampling rates".)

Not according to a ps listing. I do see one sound-related process:
   /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f

  Doc Evans

PS For reference, here are the columns I see in kmix (I freely admit that I
have never understood what they all mean; some are obvious, but some
aren't). Also listed is whether there is a green toggle light at the head
of the column and/or a red toggle light at the bottom.

Volume G
Pcm G
Speaker G
Line G, R
Microphone G, R
CD G, R
Pcm2 G
IGain G, R
Line1 G, R
PhoneIn G, R
PhoneOut G
Video G, R

There are no red triangles. Volume and IGain have green triangles. I have
tried various inputs (i.e., lighting different red lights. I imagine that
IGain is the one that I probably want for realplayer; in any case, no
setting produces any output). The obvious test was to try to record off a
CD; that didn't generate any output either.

Unfortunately "man kmix" says that there is no manual entry, and kmix
itself doesn't seem to have a Help button.
