[expert] poor swap activation with kernel 2.4.18-8.2

Hello   I upgraded to kernel 2.4.18-8.2 recently and discovered that it does not manage swap properly. All kernel messages seem correct on boot up but it just doesn't work. Does anyone know a workaround for this or perhaps there is a script that gets malconfigured on rpm installation of the kernel.   TT
