I have a NVIDIA Geforce 2 200MX and in another box a Geforce 1. Both go smooth and fast in Windows (whatever-version) and linux. The only thing you have to do is replace Mandrake nvidia driver with the nvidia's one to be able to have acceleration, TV out and this kind of nice things. There is a clear "guide for donkeys" (easy, as I got it... after some effort, hehehe O;-)
The only thing I didn't get fully working is to get TV output and normal PC monitor independent (when I activate TV out, I get the same picture in my monitor as in my TV). Appart from that, not a complain. Prices have come down, so if you finally go for nvidia I would get a 64 MB DDR (it is a bit faster), maybe a Geforce 4. I think there was a good graphic board comparison at tomshardware, and it should suit you as their perfomance in linux is similar to windows.
