Frank, I guess that linux isn't seeing your cam. I've got a Philips ToUCam USB and had the same problem. Used mknod to create /dev/video and nothing happened. Programs would still complain they couldn't find /dev/video. I could only fix that by loading the appropiate modules that would recognize my webcam.
