Yes, I've tried IceWM and Blackbox (XFce too). I expected a performance drop, just not such a sharp one. Since I plan on making the system into a router or mailserver eventually anyway, I'm not gonna bother upgrading the hardware. It'll do fine as-is for now. I just wondered if I was missing a simple desktop tweak, since I'm mostly familiar with running Redhat as a server and no X at all. Anyway I gotta tell you guys - as a desktop at least, Mandrake9 beats Redhat8 hands down. I've tried them both on the same system. Redhat's menu system in particular looks like an Amtrack disaster.
