One way of doing it is to start drakconf(the Mandrake control utility) and go 
to Boot -> Boot Config and make sure the 'No, I don't want auto login' is 
ticked and the 'Launch the graphical environment when your system starts' 
button is unticked.

This is controlled by the hidden file, .xinitrc in your home dir. I don't 
think it is normally there after a default installation, so you might have to 
create it;

echo 'startgnome' > ~/.xinitrc

This will then start the gnome desktop when you run startx. It is an idea to 
add other commented out desktops to possibly run (provided they are installed 
of course) in this file;

echo '#startkde' >> ~/.xinitrc
echo '#startxfce' >> ~/.xinitrc
echo '#starticewm' >> ~/.xinitrc

then you can use vi or emacs easily to uncomment whichever desktop you choose 
to run.
