I would like to stop using kdm, and have my machine boot
to a shell prompt. How do I stop using a window manager login?
As root, edit /etc/inittab to change the initial runlevel from 5 to 3.

Change the line:

id:5:initdefault:

to:

id:3:initdefault:

Did you know Dept:

While kdm is running, you can log in to a terminal at runlevel 3 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or F3 or F4 or F5 or F6 - yes you can have 5 separate terminal logins!).

To return to your kdm session just Ctrl+Alt+F7, then switch back and forth as you please.

Also, if I do want to start a window manager from the shell,
I know it's startx. But how do I change the wm that gets
started? startx gnome? startx xfce?
That I do not know, sorry...
