I checked into the man page. it is *almost* what I want. However, the man page says this about the "password" option:
"A password is only required to boot the image if parameters are specified on the command line (e.g. 'single')." If I have no parameters on the command line. it seems to me the password is not required. However, I'll test it out and let you know.
