Just a WAG here, but that sounds like a mesa header. I'd start looking there...

Tuxpaint compiled perfectly. Glaxium still won't though, but its a different error message now. Its: checking GL/glu.h usability... no checking GL/glu.h presence... no checking for GL/glu.h... no No GL/glu.h header... cannot do anything !
