Yes, you can. But you can even go one step further: you can put a
Debian or Mandrake Server in as well. That way you get the full benefit
of Linux :)

More seriously, you can always say during the Mandrake 9 installation
process that it should authenticate against a windows NT 4 Server, which
is the LANMAN compatibility. It does this through winbind.

However, with a little more expertise, you can edit the pam files,
install the Heimdal files on you Mandrake boxen, and set up a Kerberos 5
server, if you really want to get off M$. If you still need access to
some M$ applications, you can set up a Win2k server with Terminal
Services, and use RDesktop. You can also get the Win2k server to behave
as if it were a Kerberos authentication client using some of the
documentation on M$'s website (it has somethin' to do with kadmin,
IIRC).

I have implemented a similar, but less advanced system at Caringbah High
School, my HS; I have implemented other systems like this within the
enterprise I currently work at.

Best of luck! And of course, I'd like to congratulate you on your
choice to desert M$. :)
