personally, i wouldn't/don't want countless programs loading automatically and unnecessarily, and this all begs the question - which programs are to do this own their own? if mozilla nad openoffice, why not every single program loaded on every available storage medium?
That's your choice. After all Linux is all about your choice, isn't it?
I do agree with you about varying usage patterns among people and that's why all such quickstart options are put as OPTIONS and not built-ins !!! You can turn it on or off, your choice. But, Not having one is pretty bad. Not everyone loves to wait all their life for a program to load. Abd, Besides it's these things (End user experience, responsiveness of apps) which are considered by critics when comparing products.unless each program has a definable option to let me decide which ones to pre-load, i'd much rather keep my RAM (however much or little i may have) free to do with as i choose, not as every program i choose to keep decides. for openoffice, i leave it up for as long as i forsee needing to use it - sometimes hours or days if i do constant updates to something. otherwise i can afford to wait until it comes up, doing other tasks in the meantime.
And, Finally once again ................... Does anyone know of any quickstart products for Mozilla and OpenOffice for Mandrake 9.0 or not?

preloading has its place and definite benefits, but it may well
not be suitable for all; don't try to make it so.
