I'm using a Promise ATA 133 controller in one of my machines. To get it to boot I had to go into the motherboard BIOS and select a boot option that *wasn't* IDE0. I'm not in front of the machine now, but this was what it required to get working. BTW, some of the controllers won't boot from some of the boot-floppy emulation mode CDROMs. This doesn't apply to the HD, of course.
